Formerly of Gardiner, Woodlands Assisted Living in Hallowell, and St. Joseph Waterville- Shirley D. Cayford died March 20, 2013.Born in Oakland, ME February 14, 1929, the daughter of Omer J. and Doris Sawyer Proulx She attended schools in Waterville, including Mt. Merici's graduating Class of 1947.On May 30, 1950, Shirley married her tall solderierboy and love of her life, Cecil Cayford. They lived in Washington, DC, Manchester, NH, and settled in Gardiner in 1957.A loving wife and devoted mother, Shirley's greatest joy was her family. A devote Catholic, her faith sustained her throughout the years. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Parish in Gardiner.Shirley was predeceased by her husband Cecil Cayford, her parents, sister Patricia Proulx, brother Raymond Proulx, daughter Andrea Cayford, and best friend Doris Andrews.She is survived by four children Gregory Cayford and wife Susanne of Kennebunkport, Lynn Cayford and Wife Edna of Farmingdale, Johnna Jamison and Husband Daniel of Gardiner, Carrie Moore and companion Frank Arbour of Palermo; nine grandchidlre, Liza McKenzie, Lara Hall, Jala Tooley and Husband John, Johnna Robbins and husband Robbie, Vanessa Novak, Nicole Ball, Carmen Wright, Jimmy Moore and wife Jenny, and Damien Moore; 14 great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter Joleigh Messer. She is also survived by one sister Theresa Butkiewicz and brother-in-law Dr. Alexander Butkiewicz of West Palm, FL and China, ME; one brother Richard Proulx and sister-in-law Elsie of El Cajon, CA, special friends Robert and Ann Andews if Gardiner, Dick and Gail Manelick of Gardiner.The family would especially like to acknowledge and thank Mom's dearest neighbor's Jeff and Cindy Kobrock, and Gloria Lamiette for caring about Mom. Their watchful caring eyes brought true definition of neighbor and living example of earthly guardian angels to Elm Street.Visiting hours will be held Friday, March 22 from 1 to 3pm at Staples Funeral Home 53 Brunswick Ave Gardiner. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday march 23rd at 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Church Gardiner. Burial will be later in the spring in the Old Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery beside her husband.
