West Gardiner- Peter V. McCollett, Sr, 75, went to be with the Lord early Monday morning March 5, 2018. He died peacefully in his home in West Gardiner surrounded by his loving family following a long illness.\r\r Peter was born in Saco, Me., to John V and Beatrice (Gilman) McCollett. He was the third of seven children. Always known to be a hard worker and great provider, some of Peters fondest memories (aside from the birth of his children) were of working with his dad and brother David in the family contracting business, J.V. McCollett and Sons. He also worked tirelessly for six years as a tollbooth attendant and twenty years as a warehouse man and lift operator at Associated Grocers.\r\r Peter began dating the love of his life, Barbara Swift, on February 14, 1958, and the two were married in 1960. June 17th would mark their 58th year of marriage. Together they raised nine biological children and served as foster parents for twenty seven years to many wonderful foster children. Their home was filled with love and happiness as well as a popular gathering place for friends and neighborhood kids.\r\r Peter was predeceased by his son Brett, his parents, brothers Donald, David, and John, sisters Mercedes, Mary and Marilyn.\r\r He is survived by his wife and best friend Barb, his children, Mary, Steve, Pete, Barb, Eric, Chris, Kurt, Tony and Nick his grandson, who was like a son, two special daughters Kristina and Jessica, and his brother Mike, 25 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.\r\r Peters greatest joys were his wife and children as well as his service for the Lord as deacon at South Gardiner Baptist Church. He also enjoyed fishing, beating Barb at cribbage, and drinking his favorite drink Moxie.\r\r There will be no visiting hours.
