Nellie Evelyn Dill Glidden \r\r\nHixson, TN Nellie Evelyn Dill Glidden, 87 of Hixson, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Chattanooga Hospice Center in Chattanooga, TN. The daughter of Benjamin and Leona (Michaud) Dill, of Gardiner, she was born and grew up in Gardiner, Maine. \r\r\nShe graduated from High School in Gardiner, Maine. She started her career working for the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. in 1945, and in Dallas, Texas in 1946-1947. She returned to the VA in Togus, Maine where she worked from 1947-1952. She worked for the National Guard in Augusta, Maine from 1952-1966 and worked as a Service Representative for Social Security in Augusta, Maine from 1966-1984. She finished her career working for the National Guard from 1984-1985, where she retired after 40 years of Federal Government service. \r\r\nShe was President of Pray Street School PTA, Gardiner, Maine from 1961-1963; she was a member of Winter Street Baptist Church, Gardiner, Maine where she taught Sunday school for over 25 years, and was a member of the prison ministry for the Kennebec County Correctional Center in Augusta, Maine for 13 years. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and was President of the local chapter for 2 years, where she received a Meritorious Service award in 1991. She was a member of Whos Who of American Women from 1991-1993. \r\r\nShe enjoyed travel and journeyed to Israel and Russia, visited Hawaii several times and travelled throughout the United States. She loved working in her flower and vegetable gardens, spending time with her children and grandchildren and her many different dogs over the years. She enjoyed music, especially playing her harmonicas as part of the Goldn Girls duo, where they provided music to nursing homes in Maine and Tennessee for many years. \r\r\nNellie was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Vernard Glidden. Two sisters, Vesta Curtis of Visalia, California, and Beatrice (Dessler) Giandrea of Gardiner, Maine and a brother, Benjamin U.C. Dill of Gardiner, Maine. \r\r\nHer two children, son Scott P. Glidden, and wife Mariam, of Visalia, California and daughter Shelley L.G. Rowley of Honolulu, Hawaii, survive her. She has eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. \r\r\nThere will be a celebration of life service from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Avenue in Gardiner, Maine.
