Loretta Florence Beckwith Weston, 92, of Augusta passed away on March 27, 2013, after a long illness. She was born in Pittston, Maine on December 4, 1920, the youngest of the six children of Wayman and Sylvia Rickards Beckwith.Loretta was a graduate of Gardiner Area High School and Gates Business College. She worked for many years for the law firm of Brown, Wathen, Choate, Lund and Finn in Augusta as a legal secretary and office manager. Prior to her retirement, she worked for several years for Planned Parenthood in Augusta.A member of Highland Avenue United Methodist Church in Gardiner until her illness, Loretta served there in various capacities over the years. She also served for a number of years for the Smith Wiley Post of the American Legion in Gardiner with her late husband, Henry, a veteran of World War II. A devoted mother and grandmother, Loretta's 'real' life revolved around her children and grandchildren. One of her greatest pleasures was to cook wonderful meals for them and their friends, and she took special joy in creating very special desserts for their birthdays and other special occasions. She was known for her delicious meals and could easily have become a professional caterer, had she ever desired to follow that path. Another of her joys was travel. She enjoyed trips to Niagara Falls, New York City, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Washington, DC, San Francisco, Big Sur and Yosemite National Park in California, Chicago, Boston, Plymouth and Cape Cod. Her most exciting trip was the realization of a lifelong dream when she traveled to England and Scotland. This gentle, reserved, rather shy woman who loved to read and wrote beautiful poetry had a wonderful sense of humor, a constant source of delight to her family and those who knew her well. She had a beautiful smile that warmed the hearts of all who saw it. However, one of her most special qualities was the ability to truly listen to those who came to her with specific burdens or simply to share something special that was happening in their lives. She had a deep faith in God, wonderful personal warmth, deep compassion, great wisdom and true understanding which were great blessings to many, many people. Her unfailing support and encouragement of those she cared about made a tremendous difference in their lives. She was such a cherished treasure to her family, and we are so thankful to have had her as our 'Mom' and 'Grammie' for so many years. Loretta was predeceased by: her parents; her husband, W. Henry Weston of Gardiner; her daughter, Loretta L. Weston and son-in-law, Lewis F. Weston, of Saco; her brothers, Ernest and Frederick Beckwith; her sisters, Mazie Welch, Sylvia Herald, and Alma Linscott; and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Weston, of Augusta, and her grandsons, Christopher L.Weston and his wife, Stella, of Parsonsfield, and David W. Weston of Augusta. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
