John Robert “Bob” Hathaway 1920-2013 Hallowell- John Robert Hathaway died Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the age of 93. He was born in Randolph on March 7, 1920 to Guy and Josephine (McMullen) Hathaway and was educated in the Gardiner schools. In 1939 he married Hope Wall Davis and continued to reside in Gardiner to raise their family. Bob worked for Bath IronWorks before joining the U.S. Navy. During WWII he served in the Atlantic and Pacific Campaigns. Bob also served in the KoreanConflict serving on the USS O'Brien which he had previously worked on at Bath Iron Works in the early 1940s. Following the war Bob worked many years for S.D. Warren Paper Mill until its closing. He then worked for the State of Maine until his retirement in 1982. He was a past member of the Gardiner Fire Department and the Knights of Columbus Council 1299. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He helped to build cherished family memories. We will always remember the wonderful camping trips, special holidays, his love for the Maine outdoors, and his great sense of humor. Bob was predeceased by his parents, a sister Phyllis Spear, a brother Bill Hathaway, a sister Anne Whalen, and his beloved son John Robert Hathaway, Jr.. He is survived by his wife of 74 years Hope Davis Hathaway; a brother James Hathaway and wife Polly of Gardiner; two daughters Jane Kelly and husband Jim of Riverview, Florida; Maureen Mathews and husband Bob of Farmingdale; a special daughter-in-law Marie Hathaway of Plymouth, Massachusetts; and a special nephew Todd Robinson and wife Pat of Ft. Mahave, Arizona. Also surviving are four grandchildren Bob Hathaway and wife Carol of Alpharetta, Georgia; Susan Finucane and husband Jim of Plymouth, Massachusetts; Barry Hanson and wife Tiffany of Wesley Chapel, Florida; and Carolyn Nott and husband Ken of Farmingdale. Bob also left behind ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The Hathaway family would like to thank the Woodlands Assisted Living Facility in Hallowell for their outstanding care and compassion. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Dana Farber, Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, Massachusetts 02445-7226 in memory of his son John. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 10am at Sacred Heart Church in Hallowell. A burial will follow at the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Gardiner.
