Catherine (Kay) Thayer Obituary (1924

Gardiner-Catherine (Kay) M. Thayer, 88, of Gardiner passed away Thursday April 4, 2013 at the VA Maine Health Care Hospice at Togus. She was born April 24, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York a daughter of John P. and Agnes Mc Ginn McShea. Kay attended Brooklyn Schools She had been employed at the Augusta General Hospital, Gardiner Lumber and Harvey Distributing for seventeen years prior to her retirement she was employed as a bookkeeper for the Family Service program of HealthReach Network. Since her retirement she was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Togus. She was 1965 recipient of Medal from former Gov. John H. Reed for volunteer work for the first grant to the City of Augusta for the Neighborhood Youth Program.Kay was a veteran of World War II serving in the Marine Corps. On September 20, 1945 she married Hubert Thayer at Cherry Point N.C. He died in 1986.Survivors include her son Eugene and his wife Becky of Gardiner and her very good friend Martha Merrill of Gardiner and several nieces and nephews. At her request there will be no visiting hours following cremation she will be buried next to her husband at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Civic Center Drive in Augusta. Committal services with military honors will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 10am at the chapel in the New Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Mt Vernon Road in Augusta.
